Hello J

Iam Nazan from the department of foreign language education at METU. This is my second year at METU. Last year was awesome for me both educationally and socially. I attended some social groups during this period.  Last year, I attended Ankara Gönüllü Takımı, AGT. I enjoyed a lot. I spent much time with children in this period. I love children;therefore, this group is suitable for me. This year I learned sign language with the help of a social group at METU, Engelsiz Odtü Topluluğu. It was
again so enjoyable and useful one for me. I learned that people can laugh without talking. The language that we use became almost meaningless for me. I can empathize with people having impaired hearing. I both enjoyed and learned something worthwhile. There are stil some groups that I want to attend. For instance, I love taking pictures and painting. I have plans to do all these things next years.

The Person of The Year

GÖKHAN BULUT

If I were a jury member to choose the person of the year, Gökhan Bulut would be my candidate. Gökhan Bulut is a teacher in Van, Erciş. He became famous this year. One day, he shared a picture with his student who was crying; however, at the end of the two days he again shared a Picture with same students who was smiling at this time. He said” Okula ağlayarak gelebilirsin çocuk.. ama ben seni ağlayarak göndermem çocuk bunu iyi bil emi!!! ‪#‎öğretmen ismini almak kolaydır ama öğretmen olmak zordur.” 

He is a promising teacher. As a candidate teacher, I really appreciate him about the way he treats his students. I saw some features on him that a teacher should have. First of all, he loves living and his job. There is a tight connection between him and his students. Secondly, he makes his students happy while they are together. Therefore; every student comes to school happily. All in all, Turkey, students, needs teachers like him. I know that happiness brings success. Let's be happy! Let's be like Gökhan Bulut :)

FRIENDS

   Friends is one of the most famous American television sitcom. It was created by David Crane and  Marta Kauffman. It is about the lives of six friends living in Manhattan. The characters are Joey, Ross, Chandler, Phoebe, Monica and Rachel. All ten season were watched by all people around the world with lots of laugh. I began to watch it this year. Whenever I watched it, I could not stop myself from watching it. It is full of fun. I believe that people need to laugh in their rush lifetime. With the help of this series, people can have smiling face on their face. One of the thing that I really love in this series is that I cannot choose the favourite character of mine. All of them have an amazing ability and make me laugh. All in all, Friends received acclaim throughout its run, becoming one of the most popular television shows of all time.

FREE REFLECTION I

    The article, How to Teach English- the 10 Most Helpful Pieces of Advice, published on www.really-learn-english.com mainly mentions how to teach English in a better way. I agree with the writer on the tips that help teachers teach English better because of three reasons. The first reason is the belief that forcing students to learn does not bring success. Actually, I can understand teachers clearly. Because of the fact that they feel responsible when their students do not make progress in their lessons, they think that they can prevent this failure beforehand by forcing them. However, I am sure that forcing generally creates opposite influence on them. In other words, failure is being an inevitable situation due to the fact that forcing occurs during teaching process. The second reason why  I have consensus on with the author of article is that encourage has a great importance in teaching process. As I know from my educational background, giving encourage to students make them have more self-esteem and the belief that they can do if they want. In this matter, on account of the fact that teachers should praise their students’ work whenever possible, the students will be happy and study fondly like I was. Therefore, I attach importance to this point as a candidate teacher. The last reason is that teachers balance lessons between different skills. I think this is the most fundamental tip that should be put into practice. As I observe and experienced by myself, this problem continues in schools. It should be known and accepted that teaching merely grammar is not helping the students. In addition to grammar teaching, communication skills, reading, writing and vocabulary building should also take place in lessons. According to me, they are as important as grammar and students need to improve their all skills. All in all, there are several reasons of my agreement with the author, and I am quite sure that these tips that I mentioned can help teachers instruct English better.

        I want to mention domestic violence against women issue because of three reasons. The first reason is that getting killed women began to seem as a usual situation. It is possible to come across with news about violence against women every single day. For instance, while reading news, I encounter that love sometimes becomes the reason of a woman’s death. Moreover, the perception of “ If I can’t have you, no one can”  becomes again the reason of killing a woman. As a society we get used to hearing such news, yet I think we should not. As long as I stay quiet and people stay quiet, we cannot change the world and we cannot change the wrong perception of the world which is “Men can do everything, yet women not.” It is enough to live in man’s world. The second reason is why I have consensus on with the author of the article is the pressure of family members to the lives of women. I can conveniently say that in most families in Turkey the behavior towards girls is different compared to boys in the first place. I remembered Emma Watson’s effective speech at the HeForShe Campaign in 2014 while reading this article. During her speech she says, “I am lucky because my parents didn’t love me less because I was born a daughter.”  However, there are not many lucky girls like her in the world unfortunately. On the contrary, there are parents and brothers who can easily kill their own daughter or sister in the name of “honour”. These “honorable” men can also force them to take their own lives for the purpose that they do not want to be sent to prison. The last reason is that raising awareness for violence against women is not enough. In fact, it is a way to be voices of these women by giving concerts, mentioning the problem in articles or writings. However, all these efforts are not enough. Unless we as a mother and father change the way we bring up our sons and stop behaving our sons as the sultans in the houses, nothing will be enough. In conclusion, violence against women is not a woman problem; on the contrary, it is a social problem consisting of the violation of a human right; hence, it should not stay as a never-ending issue at the present time.
